Kelly and Jason had a fantastic summer wedding at The Farm near Asheville NC. Because this was a destination wedding for the couple and most all of their guests we didn’t get to meet Kelly or Jason before their wedding day. But once we all got to hang out with each other we knew they would be awesome clients. Most of Kelly’s family and bridal party are from New Jersey so I got to hear some awesome accents the whole time the girls got ready.
Their wedding was so much fun and one thing I will always remember is this couple’s love for dancing! That floor was hopping and everyone was having SUCH a great time.
Now to hear a bit from our couple!
A bit about Kelly… Born and raised in NJ ( in case you couldn’t tell that from my family and friends accents 🙂 ). Went to school at the University of Scranton (Yes…the place “The Office” was filmed). Lived in Hoboken, NJ and worked in NYC for a few years after college and moved to DC at the end of 2008 where I met Jason in the summer of 2009, only a few months later 🙂
A bit about Jason… Born in Richmond, VA and raised in Charlotte, NC. Jason went back to Virginia to attend Virginia Tech where he majored in business. Jason worked in the Washington DC area where he met Kelly. Going back to his southern roots, Jason dragged Kelly back to NC.
How did you meet? We met in DC at a rooftop bar, Local Sixteen, in the summer :). We both had groups of friends who wanted to go out and just ended up being in the right place at the right time.
Describe your first date? Jason picked me up at my apartment in Alexandria, VA and we went out for sushi in Arlington. I had no idea how to use chopsticks or what to order but luckily he was okay with that 🙂 After dinner we went and walked around the monuments on the National Mall. We figured since neither of us were ready to end the date after dinner that was a good sign.
How long have you been together? We were together 7 years in June and married in July!
What is your favorite hobbies and activities to do as a couple? We love to camp, hike, cook, go to sporting events (usually Virginia Tech and any Charlotte based teams) and travel as much as we can. We also love our pets, Ranger and Stella, and will watch “The West Wing” over and over and over again.
Who popped the question and HOW? Jason asked me to marry him on the beach in Topsail, NC. It was during my favorite time of day on the beach, that 4-5ish pm period where everyone else has had enough sun. We like to stay put, stay sandy, and crack a beer. Even after 7 years it was still somehow unexpected.
How long after you were engaged did you get married? We got married 1 year and 2 months later. For no particular reason other than we waited a few months to start planning our wedding (trying to really enjoy the whole ‘engagement phase’ before wedding planning craziness).
Why did you pick Asheville and the Farm? We love everything about Asheville; the mountains, the people, the creativity, and of course, the beer. After visiting The Farm it just felt like us. We loved that our wedding would feel exactly like the party we wanted to throw for our family and friends.
What tangible detail of your wedding day did you love the most? The sunset. While not all that tangible it was our favorite part. We look forward to going back for future anniversaries and soaking in the same sunset year after year. Thanks for that recommendation and location!
How many guests did you invite to the wedding? And which of you had more guests at the wedding, you or your spouse? We had 115 people at the wedding and it was pretty much split down the middle. We had our families present and then all of our friends from all different walks of life. We’re really proud of our relationships and were so glad that so many family and friends were able to make the trip to Asheville and be a part of our weekend.
What did guests eat at the reception? The food was awesome! We were so determined to make sure we ate at our wedding and we definitely did! We had fried chicken, flank steak, gouda grits, and summer veggies.
What was your first dance song and why did you pick it? ‘Steady As We Go’ by Dave Matthews. We love Dave Matthews and wanted to go a little less traditional than some. Also, if you look at the lyrics, it’s a pretty great message.
Troubles they may come and go,
But good times they are the gold.
And if this road gets rocky girl,
Just steady as we go.
What stood out to you the most when you think of your wedding? When we think about our wedding, other than it feeling exactly how we pictured it to feel all along, I think we are most grateful for everyone traveling to asheville to celebrate with us. We know that 99.8% of the wedding guests had to travel a long way and we are just so grateful for everyone taking the time and expense and spending a little time with us in one of our favorite cities doing all of the things we love (tubing, visiting breweries, and just spending time laughing together).
