Gabby and Jake’s fall Crest Center wedding was so lovely. I, Meriah, got to know Gabby a bit before the big day and she is one of the sweetest, most beautiful people I have ever met. I was super excited to get to capture the photos of her marrying her Jake. I will say more later… for now you HAVE to read more about them from their lips. (Gabby is SUPER witty! 🙂
A bit about Gabby: Gabby is an Iowa girl who hates winters, adores cats, and is always faithful to her friends and loved ones. She has a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Physical Performance and works as a Pediatric Dietitian in Corpus Christi, TX where she also specializes in devising creative ways to get Jake to eat his vegetables.
A bit about Jake: Jake is a hard-headed yet charismatic structural engineer who dedicates much of his time to making Gabby happy, yet exasperated all at the same time. He too hates winters, is apathetic towards cats, and is one of the most loyal people you will ever meet.
How did you meet? We met during our mutual writing seminar course, Sophomore year at Case Western Reserve University. We had studied each other from afar for weeks, and being the two most verbal students in the class, had essentially shared countless one-on-one conversations from across the room. However, it wasn’t until the day I (Gabby) came in to find my normal seat occupied, which forced me to take the open seat next to Jake. Being an engineering student, Jake broke the ice first by offering to fix their wobbly table. Possibly out of intimidation of Gabby’s extraordinarily good looks (Jake denies this), Jake placed a folder under the wrong table leg (Jake also denies this), thereby causing the wobble to worsen. Gabby (not an engineering student) then mentioned that maybe it would work better if he put the folder under the opposite leg (both Gabby and Jake have their own versions of this story, but Jake let Gabby write this, so that’s the version you get to read). We then continued to talk so much during class that the professor threatened to separate us.
Describe your first date? Our first date was a broke college student’s dream. Upon turning 21 years old, each Case Western student received a lunch voucher for two at Case’s renowned “Case Club.” This restaurant served some of the most exquisite food and on your 21st birthday, it was all free! Jake had just turned 21 the month prior, so one day, he casually asked if I wanted to help him use his voucher. Unfortunately, neither of us had any idea how nice this place was. We rolled into this restaurant wearing sweatpants and completely soaked from the snow. The food was great though!
How long have you been together?
Gabby: 5.5 years
What are your favorite hobbies and activities to do as a couple? We enjoy playing golf together on the weekends, and absolutely love to travel to new places together. We like to explore different areas of the world, and are always up for new adventures!
Who popped the question and HOW? Jake asked me to marry him on our trip to Prague. He, my brother David, and I were walking along a park with a fantastic overlook of the city when we came across a string quartet. We stopped to watch for a bit and just before we walked away, they started playing “Stand By Me,” which is my favorite song. I immediately got excited and started taking a video, at which point Jake started pushing me towards the front of the crowd so that I could “get a better video.” I was getting a little frustrated because I didn’t want to block anyone from seeing the band! But then after a few seconds he turned to me and said over the music, “so Gabby……” and THAT was the point at which I suddenly realized that maybe the fact that this band was set up right on our path, or that they had mysteriously started playing my all-time favorite song was NOT a coincidence. Jake continued, “The reason I brought you here is because there’s something I want to ask you. I love you, you’re my best friend, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” Turns out he had found the band on YouTube, commissioned them to learn my favorite song, and had picked out the perfect location using Google Earth.
Why did you pick Asheville and the Crest? We chose Asheville because we love the city’s artsy vibe and the gorgeous fall colors. Jake also graduated from The Asheville School so he has a special connection to the city. The Crest Center offered us a spectacular backdrop for our wedding and was one of the most elegant venues we visited.
What adjective best describes your spouse on your wedding day?
Gabby (from Jake): Stoked. All of my other adjectives were not approved by her.
Jake (from Gabby): Elated.
What tangible detail of your wedding day did you love the most?
Gabby: Definitely the dress. I never thought I would find a dress that made me look and feel so much like a princess; however, I felt like a classic princess in that dress. I loved it so much that I actually wore it the next day for Halloween as a zombie bride!
Jake: The chuppah because my brothers and I built it together
How many guests attended the wedding? About 135
What did you and your guests eat at the reception?
Gabby: We had a buffet: a green salad with toasted pumpkin seeds, fresh NC rainbow trout, bourbon-glazed apple stuffed chicken, root vegetable medley, and parmesan garlic Brussel sprouts
What was the flavor of your wedding cake? Definitely the chocolate Guinness stout cake with salted caramel buttercream filling
What is the one of the funniest things that happened on your wedding day?
Gabby: During the traditional Hava Nagila dance, I was hoisted high into the air on a chair…which was great until my uncle didn’t quite lift high enough and I slid right off onto the floor. Don’t worry though, I stuck the landing!
Jake: Gabby Iced me during the garter toss. She somehow managed to attach a Smirnoff Ice to her garter so when I went to remove it, I found the drink and had to chug it in front of all our guests
What was your first dance song and why did you pick it?
Gabby: We chose to do a combination slow song with a modified Texas two-step at the end! Our songs were “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz and “This” by Darius Rucker. Jake really wanted a country song, and I love the lyrics in “This” – THAT was the easy part. We could not agree on a slow song though. “I Won’t Give Up” was the only one we could find that we both liked.
Jake: A mix of a slow song and a country song because she’s refined and classy and I’m a little country
What stood out to you the most when you think of your wedding? Having all of our closest family and friends celebrating together in one place.
The fall color at The Crest Center and Pavilion was in peak color!
This has to be one of my favorite chuppas ever! Shout out to Shady Grove Flowers for their amazing floral.
What a lovely ketubah!
The view of the mountains from the reception.
Callie’s Confections did a great job on the cake!
Gabby and Jake had a “Brews and Views” theme that we thought was SO perfect for Asheville. Asheville was crowned “Beer city USA” for several years and the Crest Center has some amazing views!
First look with Dad.
First look with Gabby and her brother. My favorite part about this moment was when Gabby told her brother “You got a little teary”, and he promptly said, “Shut up, you did too.”
First look with Jake right before the unveiling.
We love these moments with the bridal party!
Let the ceremony begin!
Michael follows the couple out of the ceremony and captures these moments with them and their friends and family.
That candid moment where the groomsman (Jake’s brother) smells the bridal bouquet.
That couple, those flowers, and that view = perfection.
Their “mad faces” made me giggle.
That tree though.
Introducing the Mr and the Mrs!!
They surprised their family with a choreographed first dance!
Gabby’s dad welcomed everyone. This was both funny and emotional. He mentioned Jake’s dad whom had passed away this year. He also mentioned that this was indeed Gabby and Jake’s second wedding. They got married last December knowing that their days with Jake’s dad were few. They wanted Jake’s dad to be able to be a part of the wedding. It was an intimate wedding and their second wedding was for extended family and friends.
Gabby’s dad said that she loved weddings so much she had to have 2. 🙂
This is the moment where everyone is enjoying a wonderful slide show!
If you missed this in the interview above, this is the “funniest moment” for Gabby. In her words… “During the traditional Hava Nagila dance, I was hoisted high into the air on a chair…which was great until my uncle didn’t quite lift high enough and I slid right off onto the floor. Don’t worry though, I stuck the landing!”
Now, it’s the parent’s turn!
Let the dancing continue!
Sweet moments with Gabby’s nanny.
