Heather and Kevin had a Grove Park Inn wedding back in September. We so enjoyed this couple and the little details that made their day amazing. The weather was superb and fall was in the air.
The ceremony and reception was held at the country club. We have shot many Grove Park Inn weddings but this was our first large one at the country club.
Getting ready shots are so much fun. We love the close ups of all the little details of Heather’s attire! Her dress was gorgeous!
Mom helping with the veil.
Every bride should twirl in her wedding dress. 🙂
Let the ceremony begin!
This was the part of the ceremony where they combined two different sets of wine to make their own special wine. Then they both drank that special wine.
Mr. and Mrs.!
Such happy moments.
Shout out to Verge events and The Bloom Room for these amazing details of the reception!
This cake topper was awesome!
We loved the signage at this wedding!
Welcome speech from the couple brought on some laughs.
The couple had a caricature artist come for drawings of all the guest!
He was awesome!
Party time and things got a little crazy! Shout out to DJ Kipper for keeping the dance floor hoping!
Congrats Heather and Kevin!! Thank you so much for allowing us to capture your day!
Here is a little bit more from the awesome couple!
A bit about Heather: Heather was born and raised in a small town in NC. She went to the University of North Carolina for undergraduate school (go Heels!) and then moved to southern CA for optometry school. She loves to travel, to do yoga, and enjoys eating good food and drinking good wine. Despite only having one cat (for now!), her friends and family consider her a crazy cat lady.
A bit about Kevin: Kevin on the other hand is from a beach city in the suburbs of Los Angeles, CA. He went to the University of California at Irvine and attended the same optometry school as Heather. Luckily, he enjoys all the same things as Heather (good food/drinks and traveling), however his love (obsession?) for following all sports, especially the Lakers, is something Heather will never understand.
How did you meet? Our lives crossed when we met our first week of optometry school in Fullerton, CA. It only took a few months before we were no longer “just classmates.” We haven’t looked back since.
Describe your first date? It’s hard to pinpoint our first date. We started off just studying together and it quickly became an excuse to hang out without other classmates. One night we met up to study, decided to ditch that idea, and went out for sushi instead. I guess that would be considered our first date.
How long have you been together? Since fall of 2010. We took the slow track 🙂
What are your favorite hobbies and activities to do as a couple? Eating, yes, definitely eating. We consider ourselves “foodies” and are constantly on the lookout for new restaurants or coffee shops. We also enjoy hiking and exploring the beautiful outdoors (this is necessary to combat our love for food!)
Who popped the question and HOW? Kevin tricked Heather into thinking we were going to a nice dinner with some friends to celebrate Kevin’s best friend getting a promotion at work. His friends were “running late” so we decided to take a scenic stroll along a path overlooking the ocean while we were waiting. Turns out there was no promotion and no friends meeting us. He popped the question in the most perfect setting and then we enjoyed a romantic dinner to celebrate.
Why did you pick Asheville and Grove Park Inn Country Club? We fell in love with the city of Asheville when we visited a few times while doing our residency in Charlotte. Scenic hiking and outdoor activities, good food and beer – what more could you ask for? We wanted our family and friends to experience it as well. We never got the chance to go to the Grove Park Inn on our visits but had heard such amazing things about it. Planning our wedding while living in Los Angeles, we weren’t able to make the trip to Asheville to go venue searching in person so we went out on a limb and signed the contract without actually seeing it. It was everything we hoped it would be, and more!
What adjective best describes your spouse on your wedding day?
Heather – Calm and radiant
Kevin – Giddy and perfect
What tangible detail of your wedding day did you love the most? My dress- I had a vision in my mind of what I wanted but was having a hard time finding it. I had a little bit of custom work done to my dress and it came out exactly as I’d imagined!
How many guests attended the wedding? It was an intimate wedding of about 70 guests.
What did you and your guests eat at the reception? They munched on delicious hor d’oeuvres at cocktail hour that included crispy pork belly, bruschetta, duck quesadillas, and crab cakes. For dinner they enjoyed a caesar salad, their choice of rum-glazed chicken or braised short rib with delicious veggies and potatoes as sides.
What was the flavor of your wedding cake? We had 2 flavors – a traditional vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and a chocolate cake with raspberry marmalade and fresh raspberries.
What is one of the funniest things that happened on your wedding day? Definitely the reaction of our guests to our caricature artist. Everyone got a kick out of being drawn or watching others. Their reactions were priceless.
What was your first dance song and why did you pick it? “In case you didn’t know” by Brett Young – The lyrics are just spot on.
What stood out to you the most when you think of your wedding? The dance party for sure. Even though it was a smaller wedding, it sure didn’t feel like it out on the dance floor! I’m sure the open bar helped but some of my family members surprised us with some awesome and unexpected dance moves!
What is on your “bucket list” to do together as a married couple? At first travel as much as we can! So many places to see and so much good food to eat! Eventually we want to start a family- and add a few more furkids as well!

Alaina and Chris had a fun wedding back in September! As Asheville wedding photographers we enjoy getting to photograph a new venue… well a venue that is new to us! Honeysuckle Hill did not disappoint! It was charming with it’s old barn and it’s picturesque pond and gazebo.
Shout out to Joanna from Powder me Pretty for the faces!
Shout out to Love Daisy for Alaina’s hair!
Alaina designed her own bouquet! We loved how it turned out. Also the details of her dress are amazing!
We had a little rain on the big day. Conveniently, it only rained when we didn’t need to be outside AND cooled things off nicely. 😉 Sometimes rain on your wedding day really is good!
Onward to the reception!
Checking out the bride’s shoes!
Father and daughter dance.
Congrats Alaina and Chris!!
Here is a bit more from Alaina and Chris about themselves and their special day!
A bit about Alaina: She’s a small town girl from rural Illinois with big dreams. She loves her family. She’s sassy and sweet (and sometimes stubborn) and knows what she wants. She is an accomplished professional (as you can tell by the alphabet soup after her name – PharmD, BCACP, CDE, CPP), but she is a big nerd at heart and has no problem with an occasional Netflix superhero marathon.
A bit about Chris: He is from South Florida and seems to always be in a laid-back tropical state of mind when he isn’t working. He is very intellectual and analytical. He would do anything for his family and is such a good man. He is grounded and keeps me calm. He’s so kind and generous. Also a big nerd, no scratch that – a HUGE nerd! His favorite hobby is gaming. He’s always got a date with Destiny ? (Destiny 2 these days).
How did you meet? A sweet southern girl from Mississippi started working at the physician office where I was working and every month or so she would ask me if I was dating anyone. After about 6 months of her asking, I finally admitted that I was not dating anyone, so she proceeded to tell me that she knew this great guy that she and her then boyfriend (now husband) hang out with all the time. She “had a feeling about us” and thought that we would “be perfect for each other.” She insisted that we should at least meet. I was still very skeptical given how much younger than me she is. Little did I know her boyfriend was much older than her and had worked with Chris. The rest is history… and she made sure everyone at our wedding knew we were all there because of her ?. Thanks Shy! – I owe you one.
Describe your first date? We went on a ‘no pressure’ Thursday night date to a wine bar (we didn’t even have dinner; just hors d’oeuvres) and he doesn’t even drink wine. We hit it off immediately, and after 5+ hours of conversation that night, we went out again the next night to a concert to see the Eli Young Band at Coyote Joe’s.
How long have you been together? It will be 5 years in November
What are your favorite hobbies and activities to do as a couple? Traveling and binge watching tv shows on Netflix. We’re also foodies who enjoy finding new places to eat.
Who popped the question and HOW? Chris’s family has a timeshare on Sanibel Island, FL. We’ve been going there every summer since we started dating. 2016 was a particularly rainy trip – it rained almost every evening. Chris popped the question on Captiva Island on the beach after several foiled attempts due to the weather not cooperating. It really wasn’t cooperating that night either, and it was pitch black (moon covered by clouds that night) when we finally made it out to the beach. I couldn’t understand why he wanted to walk to the beach so many times that night when it was so windy and kept raining. His whole family was in on it. They kept asking what night we were going on our date night, and seemed disappointed when we didn’t get to go night after night since it was rainy. Finally on Wednesday night we went… I thought it was kind weird they were so interested, until it happened. Then of course it all made sense. It was a complete surprise, I couldn’t believe how good of job everyone did keeping it a secret, and couldn’t believe it actually happened with so many thwarted plans due to the weather and my resistance to go outside in it – #totallyclueless ?.
Why did you pick Asheville and Honeysuckle Hill? We wanted a destination wedding location that we both loved and that would be a little closer than Charlotte for my family to travel to and would be a good time for all with plenty to see and do. And bonus, it has tons of breweries, amazing food, and beautiful scenery. Also, I did my residency in Asheville, and have always loved it there. We picked Honeysuckle Hill simply because of how rustically beautiful it is, and because it felt right and we could see ourselves getting married there when we first visited it.
What adjective best describes your spouse on your wedding day?
Wonderful – Chris made me feel amazing the entire wedding from the moment our eyes met as I was walking down the isle. . . . and I found out later that he had instructed the wedding coordinator to do everything she could to keep me calm and stress free before the wedding. Always looking out for me. My husband is truly a wonderful, amazing, selfless man. I am the luckiest woman in the world and I love him so much!
Elated – In the few days before the wedding, Alaina was stressed out, so she wasn’t exactly herself. But once the big day arrived and things came together just like we’d envisioned them for over a year, she lit up like I’ve never seen before. She had the biggest smile on her face the entire evening and seeing her like that made me happier than I’ve ever been.
What tangible detail of your wedding day did you love the most?
Alaina – I loved the flowers . . . . from my bouquet, to the table arrangements, to the rustic buckets of baby’s breath down the isle. I was so happy that my vision came true and my bridesmaids and family were able to help me execute it.
Chris – The guest table. It was full of personal, meaningful things. It had the barn (for cards) that Alaina’s father built for us from wood taken from an old family barn. It had a picture of my late mother on it to symbolize that she was there with us in spirit. And it had the guest book, where so many of our friends and family left touching notes for us.
How many guests attended the wedding? 93
What did you and your guests eat at the reception? Cocktail hour was hors d’oeuvres: Bacon-wrapped BBQ shrimp, chicken & waffles, and fried green tomato biscuits. Dinner was Sirloin and Chicken with apples, country style green beans, roasted root vegetables, and a garden salad
What was the flavor of your wedding cake? No cake – we had a gelato cart (vanilla, chocolate and mint chocolate chip)
What is the one of the funniest things that happened on your wedding day? My amazing friends came all the way from London to attend our wedding and ended up getting a bit more spirited (pun intended) than they planned to. Let’s just say that toward the end of the night some interesting shenanigans ensued.
What was your first dance song and why did you pick it? Are You With Me? by Easton Corbin. Easton is one of Chris’ favorite musicians. He’s got an old school country sound, like a young George Strait. The song sums up our relationship perfectly. There are so many places we want to go and things we want to do. And there’s no one else we’d rather experience these things with than each other.
What stood out to you the most when you think of your wedding? How happy we were, how much fun we had, and how much fun everyone else seemed to be having.
What is on your “bucket list” to do together as a married couple? Buy a house together, get scuba certified, and travel the world as much as we can are on the list for now . . . .

We always enjoy the thrill of getting to photograph a wedding somewhere we haven’t previously been to. Stephanie and Austin’s Rumbling Bald Wedding provided a great experience with this and an even better experience for them and their guests. The beauty of the resort’s waterfront setting added to what was already such a special celebration with plenty of heart and soul and no shortage of reunions and good times.
A letter from Austin.
Gifts for the parents!
A moment with his grandmother.
Michael and I agree, Austin has the best smile!
The back of that dress though… <3
Twirling… on a dock that moves. Stephanie was brave!
The GORGEOUS Stephanie.
Now that is a gorgeous setting for a wedding!
These moments with dad are my favorite.
Congrats Stephanie and Austin!
Candid moments of the family while the group formal photography was going on.
We drove the golf cart around the golf course for a few photos with the mountains and sunset!
Rumbling Bald Resort clubhouse for the reception!
Yes! Yes, we will.
Introducing the MR. and MRS.!
Roasting marshmellows from the favors for the guests… why not?!
We loved that Stephanie danced with her step-dad as well!
This fella had ALLLLL the moves!
Now, I’ve had the time of my life, and I’ve never felt this way before…. I swear. (Of course, the last song of the evening was from Dirty Dancing!)
Let’s hear a little bit more from Stephanie and Austin about themselves and their wedding day…
A bit about Stephanie:
Stephanie is a hairstylist by day and cat lover by night. Full of life and loves to be around friends, family, and, of course, Austin.
A bit about Austin:
Austin is a very out going guy who likes to man the grill and entertain. He loves the Florida Gators and is a die hard fan.
How did you meet?
We met in the ninth grade (2003) but didn’t take our friendship any further until 2013.
Describe your first date?
We never really had a “first date” since we had known each other so long we kind of just started hanging out one day and it felt different from every other time we had hung out. We got together on a friends boat and ever since then we haven’t spent a day apart.
How long have you been together?
a little over 4 years
What are your favorite hobbies and activities to do as a couple?
We enjoy going out with friends, to the farmers market on Saturdays, and spending Sundays with our families.
Who popped the question and HOW?
Austin popped the question on May 20th, 2016 at the Disney Yacht and Beach Club Resort. We went to dinner at the Swan and Dolphin hotel and then took a walk around the boardwalk. He proposed down on the beach at sunset in front of the resort. It was awesome! We stayed over night on Disney property at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
Why did you pick Lake Lure and Rumbling Bald Resort?
Stephanie has been going there her whole life. It’s a sentimental place for Stephanie and her family and she knew as a young kid she wanted to get married there. Austin fell in love with it a few years ago when he went with Stephanie and her family on vacation and knew that a wedding there would be amazing.
What adjective best describes your spouse on your wedding day?
What tangible detail of your wedding day did you love the most? (Cake, dress, special item?)
after the long wait, Austin finally getting to see….Stephanie’s Dress. So I guess we’d have to say the dress.
How many guests attended the wedding?
Supposed to have 120 but with the hurricane we had 87.
What did you and your guests eat at the reception?
Prime Rib, Parmesan lemon chicken, Shrimp Scampi, and so many yummy sides.
What was the flavor of your wedding cake?
All three tiers were different
Bottom – Vanilla with raspberry compote
Middle – Champagne cake with caramel buttercream
Top – Red velvet cake with cream cheese icing
What is the one of the funniest things that happened on your wedding day?
Definitely the dog running in the reception during Stephanie and her fathers first dance
What was your first dance song and why did you pick it?
“My Best Friend” by Tim McGraw. We have always loved that song and sing it together in the car often.
What stood out to you the most when you think of your wedding?
Stephanie – The smile on Austin’s face when I walked down the aisle. It was really a moment in time I will remember forever.
Austin – The way Stephanie looked, she was so stunning I couldn’t take my eyes off my new wife.
What is on your “bucket list” to do together as a married couple?
To travel and see as much of the world as we can. Also to some day own a home in Lake Lure.
