Jess and Nate’s Crest Wedding in Asheville NC!
As Asheville wedding photographers we photograph at the Crest Pavilion often! We were there 4 times over the Fall season. Every wedding was SO different and every couple as well. Jess and Nate? What can we say. They were SUCH a cool couple to hang out with and simply so joyful on their wedding day. We are so thrilled we got to know them throughout their planning process and their wedding. We really do hope they get to move to the mountains one day (as is their hope). I think we Mozingos would like hanging out with this couple more.
More from us later. For now here is a bit from them!
A bit about Jess: I grew up in North Bend, WA, about an hour east of Seattle. I went to the University of Washington for undergrad and grad school. I majored in marine biology but have always worked in data analytics/IT. I moved to Charleston in 2010 and was hired at Charleston PD in 2011. I love everything outdoors, nature, and adventure.
A bit about Nate: I am originally from Findlay, OH (in northwest Ohio). I played football in college for Bowling Green State University, starting for 3 years. Moved to Charleston in 2007 after accepting a job as a police officer and have been a street cop for 9+ years. Love to get away and be outdoors hiking, biking, or camping in the mountains when I’m not working.
How did you meet? We met at work during a “train the trainer” class in which Jess was teaching a new software program to selected officers to train their fellow patrol officers. For several weeks later, Nate would periodically email and call Jess regarding questions that he received but didn’t have the answers for. At some point, those questions turned into “non-work related” conversations.
Describe your first date? I took Jess to the Firefly distillery plantation for some wine and liquor tasting. We then had dinner at Red’s Icehouse on Bohicket Marina on the water.
How long have you been together? A little over 3 years
What are your favorite hobbies and activities to do as a couple? Almost anything outdoors. Camping, hiking, and going to concerts.
Who popped the question and HOW? Nate popped the question. On our two year dating anniversary, we decided to go back to Red’s Icehouse for dinner. Nate surprised Jess by having his parents, brother, and a couple of our good friends also to come. We walked to the end of the boardwalk before Nate stopped to propose. Then all the friends popped out of the dark to help celebrate.
Why did you pick Asheville and the Crest Center? Asheville has become one of our favorite places to vacation and possibly a place we could see ourselves living long term one day. We knew that we wanted to get married in the mountains with all of the fall colors in October. The Crest Center was an easy decision after seeing the view it offers as a backdrop. The Pavilion as a reception area was exactly what we were looking for in a reception place. It offered a simple rustic feel that was self decorating.
What adjective best describes your spouse on your wedding day? Jess was beautiful. Nate was giddy (and handsome).
What tangible detail of your wedding day did you love the most? Our wedding gifts to each other. Nate is a lifelong Browns’ fan and has always wanted an authentic jersey from a player he grew up watching. And Nate’s gift to Jess was all things from her hometown in Washington that she grew up with.
How many guests attended the wedding? 90-100
What did you and your guests eat at the reception? Appetizers were bacon wrapped shrimp and fried risotto balls. Dinner was BBQ pork, BBQ chicken, huntsman potatoes, broccoli salad, baked beans,
What was the flavor of your wedding cake? Gluten-free (!!!) red velvet with cream cheese frosting
What is the one of the funniest things that happened on your wedding day?
A bridesmaid and groomsman singing 90’s rap in the shuttle bus to the venue
Mike dropping the rings
Nate & his brother Mike dancing with Grandma Fry
What was your first dance song and why did you pick it? Whenever we would come home from date-nights out, Nate would always play this song in the car and sing along on the way home. It just became “our song”: “Twice” by Southwood
What stood out to you the most when you think of your wedding? Nate was able to get the lead singer from Southwood to perform “Twice” live as a surprise! (Jess is still at a loss for words).
What is on your “bucket list” to do together as a married couple? Keep adventuring and exploring new things and places together. Eventually finding a “forever home” in the mountains somewhere and starting a family!
This is the view from the cabin where Jess and her bridesmaids got ready!
The weather was super bi-polar on this day. BUT that cold breeze made for some fun shots.
Shout out to Flora for the beautiful flowers!
First look with Nate on the porch of the rental home. What a perfect spot for a perfect moment.
You can tell by these photos that he loves her so so very much.
A little Tom-Foolery.
Sometimes you have a boo boo on your wedding day, right Jess?!
Jess made a stunning bride.
And apparently Nate knows how to work a camera.
As you read above… this was that moment when Jess surprised Nate with obviously the best gift ever for a Browns fan! His reaction was awesome!
Showing it off to his brother!
The clouds were dark over those mountains when we first showed up. Then the sun popped out and the clouds began to part and became this.
We Mozingos are never afraid of a little rain. Because just sometimes, you get a rainbow.
This is a completely candid moment of Nate helping Jess down the stairs for photos.
Jess’s fabulous hair and make up was done by Justine Green at Grace Salon from Charleston, SC
And Nate loved to smile and laugh.
Shout out to Michael for all of these shots. He hangs out while I am doing the formal family group photos and tries to capture candids of the family with the zoom lens. These are always some of my favorite shots. As you can tell, it was a bit chilly on this day!
Nate’s family is a hoot, ya’ll. They had us laughing OFTEN throughout the day.
Let the ceremony begin!
Nate’s dad, Bob, officiated the wedding. With tears in his eyes and getting choked up I remember him saying something like, “I have been a judge for a long time. I have officiated a lot of weddings in my time but this is by far the most special wedding I have ever had the honor to be a part of.”
Sweet moments with Nate’s dad after the ceremony.
This is when I give a shout out to the Charleston Police Department. Nate and Jess both work for CPD. They naturally wanted a photo with all of the the CPD that were able to attend the wedding. It’s been a crazy couple of years in Charleston with the shooting and hurricane Matthew. We Mozingos thank you for your service to Meriah’s second favorite city next to Asheville.
Sunset shots are so lovely at the Crest! Clouds make them even better.
My favorite photo of Jess and Nate. They make each other laugh so much.
Onward to the reception!
Shout out to Vortex donuts! The Mozingo’s favorite freshly made donuts here in Asheville!
This shocked look on Jess’ face is that moment when Nate gave her the ultimate surprise. As Jess said above when answering the question “What stood out to you most when you think of your wedding?” Nate and Jess have a song that they have claimed as “their song” (As so many of us couples do!) This was that moment when she turned and saw the lead singer playing their first dance song LIVE!
And Jess cried.
Roast… I mean “Toast” time.
This gluten free cake was done by Zoe Voulgarelis.
Lets get this party started!
Dancing with grandma.
Nate and Jess allowed us to steal them away for a few shots among the twinkle lights. Jess, your eyes are AMAZING!
SO much laughter.
Congrats Jess and Nate!! We wish you loads of happiness as you begin this new chapter in your story.
