Rebekah and Mike’s Oakley Farms Wedding!
Rebekah and Mike’s destination wedding to Oakley Farms was gorgeous! As Asheville wedding photographers we often get couples that come here to the mountains of North Carolina to get married. On this occasion we got to do an Oakley Farms wedding near Charleston South Carolina.
We have known Rebekah for some time now and one of her bridesmaids is another fellow photographer- Alisha Silver. It was wonderful to see Rebekah marry Mike and become a family with Mike’s son Michael. There were so many sweet, beautiful moments in this wedding! Lots of remembering one passed and lots of celebrating life and love.
Here is a bit more about Rebekah and Mike and some about their wedding.
Rebekah’s story- Born in Newport Beach, CA and then moved to West Palm Beach, FL and then on to NC just before starting high school. She has an older brother and younger sister and works as an Emergency Room Nurse at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY. She also just finished her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Rebekah loves being a step-mom to Michael and is enjoying having a newborn baby girl.
Mike’s story- Born in Connecticut but raised in Plattsburg, NY. He is an amazing father and works hard at providing for his family. His full-time job is being a New York State Correctional Officer and he also started up his own lawn care business in the summer of 2014 called O’Neil Enterprises. Mike enjoys boating, working out, shooting his bow in the backyard, dirt biking, and bonfires!
How did you meet?
What an Awesome Story!?! In the summer of 2011, Mike planned a vacation to Myrtle Beach with his friend Chris Coleman and they met up with his Uncle Thomas from Florida. Rebekah joined a couple girls for a weekend at Myrtle Beach. Then…
Mike’s version of the story: Rebekah followed me around all weekend.
Rebekah’s version of the story: Mike just tackled me in the pool and I was blown away by his muscular strength.
The real story: Everyone was hanging out in the same pool and Mike started up a conversation with me. One of my first questions was “Do you go to church?” Mike said, “No, but I want to get back into it.” Then I asked, “Do your parents go to church?” Then Mike said he doesn’t usually share this much information with someone so soon. It took him a minute then Mike shared about his father passing away. I shared about my brother passing away. We hung out by the pool for a few more hours. Everyone met up later for dinner and drinks. We talked for several hours then parted ways. Mike went back to NY. I went back to NC. We texted back and forth for a few days then I texted “Aren’t you going to call?” Mike called and we talked for 6 hours. From that day on we talked every day. Then he came down to visit in October we went on our first real date! It was LOVE!!!
Describe your first date?
We went to Fun Depot and played miniature golf and then went to Grove Park Inn for a romantic dinner. We ended the night watching the dueling pianos and a Halloween costume contest. It was an unforgettable evening.
How long have you been together?
We met in Myrtle Beach, SC in summer of 2011.
What are your favorite hobbies and activities to do as a couple?
We enjoy making our house a home. We fixed up our first home and sold it just prior to the wedding. After that I convinced Mike to buy another fixer upper. So here we are slowly fixing up our forever little home on five acres. We also enjoy boating together.
Who popped the question and HOW?
When: Thursday, July 03, 2014
Mike’s Mom and Sister drove all the way down from New York to meet Rebekah’s family. We all stopped at Dan and Julie’s on the way through NC and picked up Eliese. Then Maureen, Stephanie, Mike, Michael, Rebekah, Eliese, and three dogs (Bella, Lola, and Remington) all spent the next few days hanging out at Lake Hartwell with my parents, Cindy and Larry Harrington, along with Caleb (Rebekah’s Nephew). The fireworks at Clemson were scheduled for July 3rd, so Dan and Julie rushed down a day early. Everyone finally got their boats out to the fireworks area on Lake Hartwell near the Clemson Football Stadium. Just as the sun had set while out on the boats waiting for the fireworks … little Michael and Mike got down on one knee and asked, “Will you marry us?” Rebekah said, “Yes!!!” With tears in her eyes and a HUGE smile on her face! And Rebekah’s Mom screamed out to all the other boats on the water, “she said YES!” 😀
How long after you were engaged did you get married? Exactly 1 year.
Why did you pick your particular venue?
we all love being outside and also wanted to choose a place that little Michael would enjoy. So we choose a venue that we could all enjoy the outdoors and that all the kids would have a blast. Oakley Farms was the perfect spot! We had 25 kids there. They played corn hole and a giant Jenga.
What adjective best describes your spouse on your wedding day?
Mine! LOL!!! Well, really Handsome.
What tangible detail of your wedding day did you love the most?
I would have to say the charms on my bouquet for my Dad, Brother, and Grandpa. It was hard not having them there in body but the charms reminded me of the love and support they have given me all of my life.
How many guests did you invite to the wedding? Which of you had more guests at the wedding, you or your spouse?
We invited about 150. It was an out of town wedding and up to 14 hour drive for a ton of the guest. We think that it ended up being the perfect amount. About 100 people came and it was hard to visit with everyone. We couldn’t imagine if more people came how hard it would have been to say hello to everyone!
What did guests eat at the reception?
Ms. Brown’s delicious cooking! It was the absolutely the best cooking we had while we were in the south! Best mac and cheese hands down. We wish she was closer!
What is the one of the funniest things that happened on your wedding day?
Little Michael’s dancing was priceless. He worked on it all year looking up YouTube videos on dancing to prepare for the big day! He is a hit a weddings now and can boogie better than anyone we know.
What was your first dance song and why did you pick it?
“Who I Am With You” – Chris Young
Mike picked the song. When I asked him why. He says, “Isn’t it pretty self-explanatory”
What stood out to you the most when you think of your wedding?
I think of the prayer little Michael prayed before I walked down the aisle. Many people put so much time and effort into the wedding day but it’s really about the everyday family life after. Making sure that God is the center of our lives and that each of us feels supported as a part of this family.
